Magnesium and Nerve Pain

What neuropathy is, why magnesium comes up in the conversation, what the evidence does and doesn't support, and why this one needs a doctor.

Neuropathic pain doesn't behave like other pain. Burning that arrives without being touched. Pins and needles that never resolve. Numbness in the feet alongside pain in the same feet, which sounds contradictory until you've had it. Socks that feel like gravel.

If that's what you're dealing with, the most useful thing this page can do is be straight with you.

WHAT NEUROPATHY IS

Damage to the peripheral nerves — the ones running out to your hands and feet. The commonest cause worldwide is diabetes. Chemotherapy is another major cause. So are B12 deficiency, alcohol, thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, kidney disease, injury and infection.

That list matters because the treatment depends entirely on the cause. Nerve pain from undiagnosed diabetes needs blood sugar control. Nerve pain from B12 deficiency needs B12, and left long enough that damage becomes permanent.

Guessing at this from a website is how people lose years.

SEE A DOCTOR IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY

New or worsening numbness, burning or tingling in hands or feet needs assessment. So does weakness, foot drop, or numbness that's spreading.

Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body is a stroke symptom. That's an emergency call.

If you have diabetes and have lost sensation in your feet, you need regular foot checks. Loss of protective sensation means injuries go unnoticed, and that's the pathway to ulcers and worse.

WHERE MAGNESIUM COMES INTO THE CONVERSATION

Two legitimate threads.

First, magnesium is involved in nerve signalling. It influences how readily nerve cells fire, including at receptors involved in pain signalling. That's a genuine mechanism and it's why researchers are interested.

Second, some groups at risk of neuropathy overlap with groups at risk of low magnesium. NIH lists people with type 2 diabetes among those at risk of magnesium inadequacy, and diabetes is the leading cause of peripheral neuropathy. That overlap is worth knowing about and worth mentioning to your doctor.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE DOESN'T SHOW

There's research interest in intravenous and oral magnesium in specific clinical contexts, particularly around chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and it remains contested rather than established.

There is no good evidence that magnesium applied to skin treats or relieves neuropathic pain. Not from us, and not from anyone selling it to you.

The Dutch source page this replaces stated that research shows magnesium has an analgesic effect in neuropathy. We couldn't substantiate that at the level of a topical product, so we're not repeating it.

WHAT ACTUALLY HELPS NEUROPATHIC PAIN

Treating the underlying cause, which is the whole ballgame.

Specific medications that work on nerve pain — ordinary painkillers largely don't, which is one of the most frustrating things about this condition and worth raising with your doctor if you've been told to take paracetamol and get on with it.

Foot care, if you have diabetes.

Physical therapy for strength and balance, since neuropathy raises fall risk.

WHERE OUR PRODUCTS HONESTLY FIT

Not as pain relief. As comfort, and only alongside real medical care.

A warm foot soak is pleasant, and many people with painful feet find warmth eases things temporarily. If you have reduced sensation in your feet, test the water temperature with your hand or elbow, never your feet, because burns from water that felt fine are a genuine risk in neuropathy.

Zechstein Bath Soak: magnesium flakes for a warm foot soak. Warm, not hot, and check the temperature.

Magnesium Gel, 30%: on intact skin, for the ritual of massage as much as anything.

Magnesium Oil for Sensitive Skin: gentler if your skin is reactive.

Do not apply anything to broken skin, ulcers or areas you can't feel properly.
