How Magnesium Works, From the Inside Out
Most explanations of magnesium stop at a list. Bones, muscles, nerves, energy. True, and about as useful as being told a car needs fuel, oil and tyres.
Here's the layer underneath.
It runs your energy currency
Your cells don't spend calories. They spend ATP.
ATP is the molecule that pays for everything: contracting a muscle fibre, firing a neuron, rebuilding tissue overnight. And here's the part that rarely makes it into the brochure: ATP is biologically active bound to magnesium.
No magnesium, no spendable energy. Not "less efficient." The transaction doesn't complete.
Which reframes what tiredness from low magnesium is. It isn't sleepiness. It's an economy short on small change.
It's the off switch for muscle
Calcium enters a muscle cell and the fibre shortens. To release, that calcium has to be moved back out, and magnesium is part of that process.
So when magnesium is scarce, the contraction signal still lands fine. It's the release that gets sluggish.
That's the whole story behind the classic complaints. Night cramps. Restless legs. The eyelid twitch. A trapezius that's been on since Tuesday. Nothing exotic. Just a muscle that isn't finishing the second half of its job.
It sets how excitable your nerves are
Nerve cells fire when enough of the right ions cross the membrane. Magnesium influences that threshold, sitting in the way of some of that traffic.
Lower the magnesium and the threshold drops. Cells fire more readily. Practically, that reads as being easier to startle, harder to switch off, more reactive to noise and light and the small irritations of a normal day.
Raise it back and the effect isn't sedation. It's a slightly higher bar for what gets a reaction out of you.
Why your requirement moves
The US RDA is 400–420 mg a day for adult men and 310–320 mg for women. Pregnancy raises it to 350–360 mg. Useful numbers, but they describe a population, not your Tuesday.
Four things reliably push your own number up:
Stress. Sustained stress increases magnesium loss through the kidneys. The cruelty is the loop: less magnesium, less resilience to stress, more loss.
Sweat. Magnesium leaves in sweat. Train in heat, or train long, and the ledger moves.
Caffeine and alcohol. Both increase urinary excretion. Not catastrophically. But daily is daily.
Diet that skipped the green things. Refined grains have had the magnesium processed out. A week of convenience food is a week under target.
Why people use it on skin
Two practical reasons, neither of which requires overclaiming.
The first is the gut. Oral magnesium has a low ceiling. Go past it and the digestive system objects in a way nobody needs described. That ceiling is where most magnesium routines die.
The second is location. If your problem is a specific calf at a specific hour, putting something on that calf makes intuitive sense in a way a capsule never quite does.
What we won't do is quote you an absorption figure. The clinical work is early: a 2017 PLOS One pilot study found a larger serum rise with magnesium cream than placebo, significant only within a subgroup, and its authors flagged the small sample and short duration themselves. Anyone quoting a precise percentage is quoting a marketing department.
Building it into an actual day
